Solidarity event for Care UK and Your Choice Barnet strikers-Tuesday 9 September, 6pm…can you make it?

solidarity event in Central London next Tuesday 9 September, 6pm at the Thornhaugh Street campus of SOAS (by Russell Square tube) for Care UK and Your Choice Barnet strikers. Care UK workers will be in their third week of strike action next Tuesday (there’ll have taken seventy days of strike action by the end of next week) and Your Choice Barnet will be ending a 48-hour strike against pay cuts. If you can get along please do and bring a collection too!

Care UK
In one of the longest strikes in the history of the health service, workers are fighting to secure a living wage for staff working in privatised services formerly run by the NHS. Care UK, whose former chairman Lord Nash is now a government minister, took over services for people with severe learning disabilities in Doncaster, south Yorkshire, this year, cutting wages of staff who had been on NHS terms by up to 35% while bringing in 100 new workers on £7 an hour. They recommenced strike action in August after re-balloting and are visiting London to protest at the Headquarters of Bridgepoint, the private equity company that now owns Care UK.

Your Choice Barnet
Carers for the disabled in Barnet are starting strike action on 8th and 9th September to oppose cuts to pay and conditions imposed by the “arms length” organisation Your Choice Barnet created by Barnet Council.
SOAS Solidarity social
Cleaners at SOAS won a spectacular victory to achieve sick pay, increased paid leave and pension rights. Solidarity was key to their victory and SOAS UNISON Branch is hosting this social evening to build solidarity with the Care UK and Barnet disputes
Both groups of workers will be on strike that day and the event could provide a great focus for support and debate about the way forward.

We’d encourage everyone who can to come along with a collection for care UK /Your Choice Barnet. You can download the Care UK collection sheet at http://www.scribd.com/fullscreen/238324082?access_key=key-xRKi6EjL3z7AV5GZfHlW&allow_share=true&escape=false&show_recommendations=false&view_mode=scroll

Please come along to meet the strikers – to bring collections & donations or to arrange for strikers to visit your branch/workplace
