The NHS was created in 1948, at a time when the
country’s budget deficit and national debt were
far worse than now.
Enshrined in this Act was the following:
duty of the Minsister of State for Health
to provide free of charge
“the establishment in England and Wales
of a comprehensive health services for the
prevention, diagnsis and treatment of illness”,
and to do so by providing “to such extent as
he considers necessary to meet all reasonable
requrements
(a)hospital accommodation;
(b) medical a, nursing and other services required
at or for the pruposes of hospitals;
(c)
the services of specialists, whether at a hospital,
a heath centre or a clinic, or of if necessary on
medical grounds, at the home of the patent…’
